If done improperly, livestock decontamination can cause stress to the animals, which could cause significant health issues. The effects of stress on an animal are similar to those on humans. In both humans and animals, stress causes the body to release adrenaline and cortisol hormones. These chemicals cause heart rate and respiration to speed up and suppress the immune system.
Agricultural animals must be managed in a complex array of priorities, including public health and safety, food supply safety, animal welfare, agricultural economics, and the environment.
Animal decontamination is complex and requires a commitment to training, time, resources, and the engagement of those with expertise, experience, and management of animals and hazard incidents.
This class provides training and tools for maintaining the operational ability of livestock exposed to nuclear, biological, and chemical hazards. The training also includes understanding livestock behavior and safe handling.

Under FEMA resource typing, animal decontamination personnel must participate in an animal decontamination exercise once every two years.
An extensive animal livestock system is provided for low-stress handling.
A certificate of completion will be provided once students show knowledge and the ability to decontaminate an animal properly. This training meets the requirement for FEMA participation in animal decontamination exercises.
